this top, is, i mean!!

the sleeve cuffs and band that fits to the hem seem to be too short for the pattern. In addition, they’re designed in such a way that they’re sewn as a circular band, then folded inside itself, and the “fold” marks the end of the sleeve or hem (I hope that makes sense). unfortunately they’ve not made allowances for the fact that the shape of the sleeve and top is not square, so I’m left, after folding, with a wodge of material inside the bottom of the top and the sleeve cuffs. I’m not impressed with this pattern, its the first simplicity i’ve tried and i’m not sure i’ll be getting any more after this. I’m certainly not making this particular pattern again, although, since i’ve now got the pattern, i’d be stupid not to at least try some of the other tops – the more you use a pattern, for obvious reasons, the cheaper it becomes, and i really can’t afford to only use a pattern once at £6.50.

Having said all that: the sleeve cuffs are now attached to the sleeves. the top part of the top is almost all finished, just a little handsewing to do. The hem cuff is attached to the bottom part of the top, all the tucks made, i just need to bondaweb the hem to the main piece. I tried to make some ties to be attached to the sides, to tighten the top around the tummy a little, out of the lilac material today but it just ended up wodgy, so i gave up on that and decided to try to find some ribbon in a suitable colour tomorrow to be stitched into the top instead. then its just a case of attaching the top half to the bottom half, which is easier said than done.. I’m not hopeful, given the problems i’ve had this afternoon. Anyway. the end is in sight.. Photos below the cut, as usual..

Off to Abakhan Fabrics tomorrow: pick up a new light bulb for the machine, my new dress pattern, and a few other bits and pieces.. (*rolls her list out and watches it trundle across the floor*).. i’ll take photos of everything when i get home so you can see all my new goodies!! then i’ll try to get this top finished.. with a bit of luck the rest of it will be easier.. I hope so anyway!

you can see the problem here. the bottom of the top is slightly A line, but the lilac hem is straight.. sew it in line with the main top so it looks all neat (as i did) and you end up with a wodge of material inside when you fold it..
