As promised, i’ve spent the afternoon working in the garden again. This time i was rebuilding bed 6, which is where i grew sweetpeas the year before last, and onions last year. The wooden sides of the bed had folded outwards and the whole bed needed digging over and revamping, so i decided to pull out the wood, dig over the bed, expand it a little, and use bricks from beds 7 and 8, which i won’t be planting up this year, to build up bed 6 a bit. Canes will go in there and i’ll be growing a mix of sweetpeas, ipomea (morning glory) and various other climbing flowering plants. It looks really good now, and i’m dead pleased with it. I also weeded half of bed 5 (pulled out various grassweeds, dandelions, and some nettles, but there’s a lot of them so i need to get some weedkiller) and transplanted some ornamental grass i’d moved from the greenhouse hole when i filled that in.

The garden is really starting to look good now – much more organised and shapely. there’s still a lot of work to be done – bed 3 needs weeding badly, for example – and there’s the rubbish pile by the gate that i have been swearing i would sort out for the last couple of years… but i will get there. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all!

Tomorrow: strimming the grass down, moving the cold frame and pots inside, weeding the other half of bed 5, and sowing some more seeds…

more photos behind the cut, including a lovely photo of Jess.

Weeded half of bed 5. All thats in this half now is the ornamental grass (up by the shadow of my head), some honeysuckle, geranium and nettles.
