When i went into Manchester to sort out my bus pass last tuesday,  I took my camera with me. I made a detour to visit the gardens of the old people’s home round the corner, but once in town, i swiched into street photography mode. This is something i learned about from watching the BBC 2 series – “The Genius of Photography“, which has been an amazing series over the last month or so, broadcast on a saturday evening. Its detailed the history of photography, viewing important photographs, but also, where possible, talking to photographers. And last week’s programme taught me about Street Photography. I was keen to have a go.

bored men with their children

Fathers with their children

I think, of the 50 or so that i took of this batch, this one is possibly my favorite. Its trimmed down from a wider shot, but it says a lot, i think, about society and fathers. The gardens, particularly round the fountains (which weren’t working that day), seemed to have more than a few men with children – i assume, their fathers, and you have to wonder: single parents? fathers taking their children to work day? Visitation rights? Who knows.

more photos behind the cut, of course.

Oxford Road is notorious for buses running along the route - the road is thick with them.

In the centre of the gardens are a bunch of fountains set into concrete, you can run amongst them if you wish, and children often do, in summer, at least. Through the middle of the water area is a walkway. This shot was taken looking along that walkway.

A statue of Queen Victoria that stands in the Gardens. The white lipstick stuff isnt a photo trick. The statue has been daubed, along the lips, eyes and cross, with pink florescent paint.

This picture, to me, is the architectural image of the credit crunch. There used to be a pound shop, behind the boardings, which was pulled down. I think the intention was to build a new building at some point. This was more than a year ago.

Theres a certain anonymity in a city street photograph like this. This could be almost any town or city in the UK.
